Several countries claim to be at the heart of Europe, but according to the research of the French National Geographic Institute, the one and only geographical central point of the continent is in Lithuania, a fact that has even won recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records.
In 1989, a group of French scientists from the institute announced that the geographical centre of Europe was just to the north of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius – 26 kilometres to be exact – near the village of Purnuðkës.
The map references of their version of the centre of Europe are
54 degrees, 54 minutes latitude and 25 degrees,
19 minutes longitude.

Druskininkai and Vilnius plan to compensate for lack of winter snow
Lithuanian ski runs are located in Ignalina, Birstonas and Vilnius.
According to Gintautas Indriunas, head of tourism development at the Lithuanian State Tourism Department, these ski runs are simply slopes where artificial snow is used. He stresses that skiing is impossible in Moletai, Anyksciai and other Lithuanian “ski resorts” unless there is enough natural snow. To compensate, indoor skiing is now entering the Lithuanian market.
The municipality of Druskininkai has plans to invest in an all-year-round indoor ski resort.
Not to be outdone, Vilnius City Council has also approved the construction of a new shopping and entertainment centre that includes an indoor ski slope.
