The Tall Ships Races Baltic 2009.jpgOn 2-5 July 2009 the first stage of the Tall Ships’ Races Baltic 2009 is commencing in Gdynia (Poland), which is going to last six days. It expected that over hundred sailing ships are going to start in Gdynia and compete to the second the Tall Ships’ Races Baltic 2009 port in Saint Petersburg (Russia), which is welcoming the regatta on 11-14 of July. Non-competing 9 days sailing is getting across from Saint Petersburg to Turku port in Finland, where legendary sails will be enjoyed on 23-26 June and from that point the sailing ships will be ready for the final stage of the races from Turku to Klaipeda.

On July 31 – 3 August Klaipeda is going to be decorated by hundreds of sails. It is planned that 90-100 ships are coming to Klaipėda in 2009: about 16 sailing ships of A class, about 12 ones of B class, 50-60 ones of C and D classes. About 4,000 – 5,000 crews’ members are going to participate in this event.

Each port, accepting the participants of the Tall Ships’ Races Baltic 2009, is going to arrange welcoming and seeing-off festivals, their guests will be able to admire the parade of sailing ships leaving the port and sailing to sea. The major events of the regatta in Klaipėda is going to be the opening ceremony of the festival, visits onto the ships, the crews’ parade, the captains’ ball, the crews’ concerts, sport competitions, excursions, receptions on the ships. As the traditional Sea Festival is taking place simultaneously, both events are going to complement each other, making Klaipėda an actual cultural port of the country for four days. The event is going to be crowned a final port’s privilege – a unique Sails parade, which could be watched by thousands of local people and guests on sound-recorded port berths, town beaches in Melnragė and Smiltynė. Our country’s President is going to watch salutes from the legendary sailing ships of the Tall Ships’ Races Baltic 2009, standing on deck of a military naval vessel of the Republic of Lithuania.

During the visit of the Tall Ships’ Races Baltic 2009 all the towns are attempting to show all the best they have. This regatta is an extraordinary event to Lithuania: for the first time in the millennium history of our country so many sailing ships with foreign flags are going to visit Klaipeda Seaport simultaneously. This supreme event will serve as a good occasion to our country’s citizens understanding that Lithuania is not only the Maritime State engaged in cargo handling, but the port’s activities are also related to sailing ships. The values of the Tall Ships’ Races Baltic 2009 regatta is going to spread around the world through Klaipėda Seaport gates, opening new ways to our country’s youth, sailing fans and peoples’ friendship.

Some of the oldest ships participating in the modern „The Tall Ships’ Races“ regattas have confirmed their arrival to Klaipeda. On July 30th, we shall welcome two of the Danish sailing ships:

“Den Store Bjørn” schooner built in 1902 and gaff ketch “Skibladner II” from 1897 – both of them participating in the Class B race.

“Den Store Bjørn” is three masted wooden schooner of 37.5 m (123.0 ft), built in 1902. It has participated in the both World Wars, has crossed the Atlantic numerous times and has participated in the Tall Ships’ Races no less than 8 times. In 1992, the sailing ship won the race from Karlskrona in Sweden to Kotka in Finland, and in 1995 it was crowned as the winner of the race in the Class B.

“Skibladner II” was build in 1897 by N.F. Hansen in Odense, and sailed with goods until FDF Københavns Søkreds (Danish youth scout organisation) bought the ship in 1962. From October to May, the ship is placed in the harbour just next to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the heart of Copenhagen. Today, one of the main activities beside sailing in the Søkreds is to bring Skibladner back to it’s original form. From 1990, Skibladner II is a frequent participant of Tall Ships’ Races.

During their stay in Klaipeda, all the spectators of „The Tall Ships’ Races Baltic 2009“ finish would be able to visit the decks of “Den Store Bjørn” and “Skibladner II”.

On February 21-28, the City Hall Square in Vilnius will feature Icy Baroque.

It is a glowing city of ice. It is four or five metre-high ice copies of the most spectacular baroque buildings of Vilnius. It is also magnificent visual projections and the whole bunch of the best of the Lithuanian club music, and at the same time it is a never ending chatter of children from all over Lithuania. Or maybe it is just another project of the Lithuanian architectural heritage and a part of the Living History programme of Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009. Read more

“Užgavėnės” is a Lithuanian festival that takes place during the seventh week before Easter ( Ash Wednesday). Its name in English means “the time before Lent”. The celebration corresponds to Roman Catholic holiday traditions in other parts of the world, such as Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, and Carnaval.

Užgavėnės begins on the night before Ash Wednesday, when an effigy of winter (usually named Morė) is burnt. A major element of the holiday, meant to symbolize the defeat of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, is a staged battle between Lašininis (”porker”), personifying winter, and Kanapinis (”hempen man”), who personifies spring. Devils, witches, goats, the grim reaper, gypsies, and other joyful and frightening characters appear in costume during the celebrations. The participants and masqueraders dance and eat the traditional dish of the holiday - pancakes with a variety of toppings, since round pancakes are a symbol of the returning sun. In the capitol city of Vilnius, the celebration takes place on Gediminas Avenue, as well as at many youth organizations. This year Uzgavenes will be celebrating at - 24 February (Tuesday).
