Kaziuko muge - Little Casimir’s fair 6 - 8 of March

Kaziuko mugė (English: Kaziukas Fair) is a large annual Lithuanian folk arts and crafts fair dating to the beginning of the 17th century. It was originally held at the two main markets in Vilnius, Lithuania, as well as in the city streets.The fair is traditionally held on the Sunday nearest to St. Casimir’s Day, March 4, ( this year Kaziuko fair will be held 6 - 8 March)  the day Saint Casimir Jagiellon died. In Lithuanian, Kaziukio mugė means “Little Casimir’s” Fair (Kaziukas is a diminutive of Casimir).

Today, Kaziukas fair also features music and dance; it attracts tens of thousands of visitors and many craftsmen from all over the country as well as from neighbouring states such as Latvia, Russia, and Poland.The pavilions of the fair occupy streets and squares in the Old Town of Vilnius.

They start in Gediminas Avenue, traverse the Cathedral Square, and branch into Pilies Street, B. Radvilaitės Street, passing St. Anne’s Church and the Orthodox Cathedral of the Theotokos, and into the so-called Tymas’ Quarter on the left bank of Vilnia River near Užupis.In recent years the fair has also been held in Kaunas at the Laisvės alėja and Town Hall Square. Similar festivals are also held in Hrodna, Belarus, the city where St. Casimir died, as well as in some cities in Poland after World War II.The arts and crafts at the fair include hand-made goods from local craftsmen, such as apparel, knitted clothes, footwear, toys, utensils, metal craftings, souvenirs, and paintings. Foodstuffs such as rye bread, bagels, honey cookies, meat and diary products, natural honey, beer, and kvas are sold as well.Traditional “palm” bouquets (called “verbos”, hence Verbų sekmadienis) are one of the fair’s specialties. Made of colorful dried flowers and herbs, they are taken to churches on Palm Sunday. The shape of the “palms” resembles a lily, a flower with which St. Casimir is traditionally portrayed.Another popular product at the fair is the “muginukas”, an often heart-shaped honey cookie, decorated with colored sugar flowers, zig-zags, dots, and birds. Popular men’s and women’s names are written on the cookies. People buy them to give to their loved ones. It is a custom to bring some back for anyone who had to remain at home.

Castles of Lithuania

Rokantiškės Castle (Lithuanian: Rokantiškių pilis) ruins are in Naujoji Vilnia elderate of Vilnius, Lithuania.

The castle was located east of Vilnius on a high hill near the Vilnia River. It was built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style and has been the seat of the Olshanski family. Alexander Olshanski, Jurgis Olshanski and the last family member Pawel Olshanski have lived there. After his death the castle was inherited by Bona Sforza and later passed to the Pac family. The Deputy Chancellor of Lithuania Stefan Pac was visited here by the King Vladislav Vasa on July 15, 1636. Read more

Spanish magazine suggesting visit Lithuanian past

2009, on the second edition of Spain tourism publication “National Geographic España” issue of the 10 best palces in the world travel to the past. Decent 9-th place was taken Grūtas park in Lithuania. According to the Lithuanian Tourist Information Center (TIC) of Barcelona, Raimundo Michnevičiaus, Journal says that in 2001, founded the park is the place where the rest ofSoviet era sculpture. Referred to Grūtas the park to see Lenin, Stalin and the famous Lithuanian Communist monuments.

In addition to Grūtas Park, in the first ten will also fall Gaimano village (Patagonia, Argentina), Kirivinos Island (Papua New Guinea), Gorki-Terelj National Park (Mongolia), Sautosjohkka (Sweden), Lake Peipsi (Estonia), Riga Museum of Ethnography in the open air (Latvia), Sinai desert (Egypt).Lithuanian Tourist Information Center through the activities of the Spanish, not only more and more aware of the Lithuanian tourism opportunities, but also interesting for them on our objects. In 2008, Lithuania TIC care of Barcelona in Spain was published in the press 12, which prepared a Spanish journalist returned from a press tour in Lithuania, and 65 publications, the information on tourism opportunities in Lithuania by Lithuanian TIC.

There are currently abroad are 8 Lithuanian TIC: Italy, Spain, France, Great Britain, Germany, Finland, Poland and Russia. State Department of Tourism and the Lithuanian foreign TIC initiative during the year 2008, in cooperation with the tourist information centers, the foreign press published 615 articles about Lithuania - the country attractive to tourism.

Grand event in palace of the grand dukes of Lithuania

Vetrunges maketasThis year on 11 February, Wednesday, 11.00. and will be installed one the palace of the grand dukes of Lithuania the weathercock on top. This is very expressive and an important symbolic meaning for an architectural element, the weathercock of Vilnius and become one of the distinguishing marks, the draft prepared loudest and most active developer of Lithuanian heraldry, Heraldry Commission of Lithuania Arvydas Kazdailis a member of the artist, in collaboration with the design and restoration of the Institute of architects (regent palace restoration project leader Richard Bitovtas, architects Rūta Grigienė of helmet and Linas Vaitiekunas). Weathercock project was coordinated with the Lithuanian Heraldry Commission of the Republic of Lithuania’s President, Chairman of dr. Edmund Rimša also reviewed and approved by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the governor and the appointment of the House of Recovery to the Commission, led by President Algirdas Brazauskas. The late Renaissance and early Baroque tower and weather vane peak helmet decorated with istorical forms of Lithuania Coat of Arms - Vyčio - mark Lithuania and ruler of Grand Duke with crown. On weathercock also immortalize regent palace restoration date - 2009, Lithuania millennium jubilee year. As is known, the palace of grand dukes of Lithuania House of Restoration in Lithuania is one of the Millennium project.

From 2004 exhibitions, expositions, to simulate a future major LDK rulers to restore the permanent exhibition of the House, held the Lithuanian Art Museum.

J. S. Bach Music Festival

J.S.Bach Music Festival in Vilnius is an annual event celebrating artistic inspiration, providing the stage for exciting initiatives and featuring conceptually compelling programmes, with particular focus on the music of the great German composer. Under the artistic direction of Prof. Algirdas Vizgirda, flutist and artistic director of the Musica Humana ensemble, over a few years J.S.Bach Music Week has grown into an international J.S.Bach Music Festival, attracting audiences to the spectacular venues in Vilnius Old Town and inviting distinguished musicians renowned for their broad approach to the repertoire they perform. The first edition of the festival was held in March-April 2007. After a short break, the festival resumed in 2009. Read more
