With the inflow of tourists decreasing, those who work in the once stable and calm hotel sector in Lithuania are voicing their complaints about the unfavourable business conditions more and more often. However, Verslo Zinios writes, some experts claim that instead of complaining the hotels should revise their pricing and marketing strategies. Hotel owners respond that prices for accommodation and other services in Lithuania are already well below the EU average. Minister of Economy Dainius Kreivys disagrees. “The prices for hotel accommodation and other services are higher in Lithuania, especially in the resorts, than they are in Europe. I believe that the businesses will find the right resources and the prices will go down,” he says. According to the Department of Statistics, the country’s accommodation businesses received 335,100 guests in Q4 2008, a drop of 6.1 percent compared to the same period in 2007. They received 1.8 million tourists in total last year.
