“Big in Japan”

Date: 19 Jun. - 16 Aug.
Venue: Contemporary Art Centre (CAC)

Participant: Watanabe Go, Yayoi Kusama, Paramodel, Hiraki Sawa

The Contemporary Art Centre is proud to launch the first major exhibition of Japanese contemporary art presented in Lithuania. Big in Japan continues the CAC’s dynamic Vilnius culture capital year program – showcasing the latest developments in contemporary art from around the world.
Big in Japan is the contemporary art show and the first exhibition of Japanese contemporary art in Lithuania. Instead of making a typical group show, consisting of many separate art pieces by different artists, curators of the show decided to present each artist in big scale, providing each participant a separate hall as if for a solo show. The exhibition presents 4 artists/art groups, each of whom create separate worlds with their own atmospheres. The exhibition features artists from different generations, who have their strong artistic identity: starting from the contemporary art legend Yayoi Kusama with her landmark piece “Dots Obsession”, and ending with younger artists, such as Watanabe Go, who’s posthuman portraits with their piercing eyes capture attention of any audience in any country; the art duet Paramodel, famous for impressive overall installations from toy rails or water pipes; and Hiraki Sawa, one of the best known Japanese young video artist with his dream-like video stories. Instead of providing a historical overview or a extensive research of Japanese contemporary art this exhibition presents it as somewhat remote and unknown world, which nevertheless leaves a spellbinding impression and arouses a wish to continue the further acquaintance with it.

De Phazz is a downtempo jazz ensemble integrating modern turntablism and elements of soul, latin, trip hop and drum and bass into a lounge music sound. De Phazz is led by Pit Baumgartner, a German producer who changes his crew for every new album. Some of the more permanent members are Karl Frierson and Pat Appleton. Since the release of Detunized Gravity and Godsdog, De Phazz have appeared on the radar of listeners of equally innovative and sample-driven jazz by the likes of Amon Tobin and The Cinematic Orchestra. The band has released records on Mole Listening Pearls and Universal Jazz Germany along with single releases on Edel Records and United Recordings, and also remixes existing material.

It is not necessary to talk about music, just feel it… This is group’s motto.
