The idea to organize the festival “Daugirdas Live” was born to the owners of the Good Music Club and hotel “Daugirdas”. Three years ago, two native-borns of Kaunas, energy-driven men – founder of the club Česlovas Švarplys and owner of the hotel Vytautas Gustas – met in the Old Town of Kaunas. One of them held concerts with music groups in the yards of the Communication Museum and Maironis Museum, the other was completing the construction of a hotel. It was then that the idea was born that only a serious blues festival might rescue the dying Old Town of Kaunas. Last year, businessmen received the Kaunas Municipality’s support for co-financing the construction of an amphitheatre and a stage.
The first festival was a great success. It was held in great weather, with sun shining, clear blue sky and even a rainbow. The rain, if it were, would have done significant damage to the new roofless stage. Kaunas people and guests were invited to listen to seven groups from Europe, the USA and Africa. The success of the first festival paved the way for its future.
The second festival “Daugirdas Live 2009” will continue until the end September. The organizers of the festival encourage Kaunas people not to rush out of the city and stay to listen to four wonderful concerts.
In June, the concert was given by the new blues star Michael Burks (USA) with a group. The guitar player, painter and author of songs Michael Burks has got the nickname Iron Man from his impressive, hours-lasting shows, frenetic guitar attacks, strong smoker’s voice and drive of his camper for thousands of kilometres. In a modern world of blues, nobody has been so successful in combing the blues of strong electric guitars and the untamed rock’n’roll energy, as Burks has been.
On 2 July, people came to listen to Peaches Staten (USA), most favourite performer of the first festival. She was assisted by the Italian blues group Luca Goirdano Band. The combination of the Chicago blues and the Italian temperament, also the use of the non-traditional instrument, ancient washboard, produced the impressive atmosphere. 3 August will be the main day of the festival with the group of eight players from New York, Hazmat Modine.
Hazmat Modine plays the blues to be probably heard in New Orleans public houses, in a city on the bank of the Black Sea, not far from Macao, inhabited by gipsies. It is the absolutely wild blues.
The festival will be closed by Ian Siegal Band (Great Britain) on 31 August. Ian Siegal - Blues guitarist and vocalist is coming to Lithuania for the second time. Ian Siegal - the young, but one of the most prominent blues stars in Great Britain. Ian Siegal – the child of 70‘s, in 2005 was already at the top of the list of soul, blues and jazz best singers in Holland.
2006 year was his debut year in the USA – he performed in major clubs and the famous music festivals in the west coast.
The performance of the emotional white blues-player will make you never forget him. The organizers of the festival promise that the best music will create the best mood.
The motto of the festival: the blues does not fear crisis, for it is born in the time of crisis – from hope and nostalgia for good times…
