Certain facts, events, real people. This year’s theme focuses on the world’s cultural wealth and the important role sustainable tourism plays in revitalizing local traditions and making them flourish as they cross other cultures.
A huge variety of local customs co-exist all over the world, be they languages, religions, architecture, food, politics or natural environments. This diverse environment has allowed the travel and tourism industry to thrive and become the largest single export industry and a leading force in the service sector.
Every region of the world is distinct and thus has something both to offer and gain through travel and tourism, particularly less developed nations. It is the responsibility of industry stakeholders to harness these opportunities whilst facing the long term challenges engendered by travel and tourism.
‘Tourism - Celebrating Diversity’ highlights this varied environment which is at the very centre of tourism.
Diversity has indeed been the motor behind travel and tourism for centuries.
It is our responsibility to promote the sustainable development of the industry whilst conserving the unique facets present on the globe.

A pyramid, which is made of children drawings, is opened at the Vilnius city (Lithuania) central square. The pyramid is 8 meters high and consists of more than 400 drawings made by children from different European countries. Vilnius has received this unique gift from a German city – Weimar.
The international project “The Pyramid” was created in Weimar when the city was the European Capital of Culture in 1999. Then, children and young people from 23 European countries were participating in the project. By 2009 the young artists have drawn more than 2 000 illustrations-triangles, which reflect the theme of solidarity and justice. Love, homeland and family dominates in each of the drawings as well.
This year the travelling pyramid of children drawings has stopped in the Lithuanian capital – Vilnius. The pyramid at the central city square will be available until October 14, 2009.

Such an event is very important for the city and the people living there. We are trying to renew ties with various groups in the community and persuade this “lost public” to once again “believe” in theatre and reach out to the new audience. We know that the audience here understands theatre and have their own tastes and cravings, and that they truly appreciate conceptual and quality theatre events. The festival will strive to get all different kinds of people to come to the theatre and to address the confrontations and connections offered by the theatre makers.
Why the name “Sirens”? In ancient mythology, these bird-like women were dangerously tempting sailors passing by. The festival is like a temptation, an invitation, a magical spell impossible to draw away from. In today’s world, they are like an alarm signal, a signal of danger that draws one’s attention in a split second. The new theatre festival needs to find its own position so it can be seen and heard.
Programme of the theatre festival “Sirens 2009″ :
