Recent attempts to create an official logo for Lithuania have ended in disagreement between government, business, and cultural groups.
Step forward photographer and marketing expert Marius Jovaisa. With only 50,000 litas in private funding, he and a small group of publicly-minded designers have taken the bull by the horns and created a logo which, they say, anyone is free to use.
Their emblematic design uses a stylised version of the Vytis, the sword-wielding mounted knight from Lithuania’s coat of arms that has been set in a heart-shaped piece of amber and given the tagline “Lithuania – Heart of the Baltic.”
Asked by journalists if he thought the tagline might risk offending Latvians and Estonians, Jovaisa said that marketing is about getting out in front of the competition.
Jovaisa said political, government, and cultural groups can employ the logo freely, adding that he has set up a non-profit company for administering it.
