This year Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday, February 16, 2010.
Known around the world as Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday and in the vernacular as Pancake Day, the Lithuanian version of the festivities held on the day before Ash Wednesday at the start of Lent is called Užgavėnės (literally, ‘before lent’), a distinctly pagan celebration marking the slightly pre-emptive return of the sun. In Vilnius on the day find a traditional tradesmen’s fair outside the Town Hall between 12:00 and 19:00 complete with food, beer, hot wine and pancakes, where among other things at 15:00 expect the making of a mammoth pancake in the shape of Lithuania. At 15:45 people assemble by the statue of Grand Duke Gediminas dressed as witches, goats and devils as well as grotesque contemporary figures, their task to capture Morė, Goddess of Death (this year represented for reasons best left to the imagination by a four-metre balloon statue), take her to the Town Hall and set fire to her whilst two women dressed as Kanapinis (Spring) and Lašininis (Winter) have a fight. The irresistible if somewhat incomprehensible fun continues into the night with much dancing, playing, pancake-eating and drinking.

The presentation of the book “Masks of Mardi Gras” on 9th of February at 6.00 pm. at the “Bistro 18” (Stikliu St. 18, Vilnius).
The authors of the book will participate at the presentation - Prof. Libertas Klimka, Prof. Stasys Skrodenis and the compiler of the book – docent D. Arunas Vaicekauskas.
All events are free of charge.
