The 11th of March 2010 marks the twentieth anniversary since the Supreme Council (Reconstituent Seimas) of the Republic of Lithuania declared the Act on the Re-establishment of the State of Lithuania, which “decrees and solemnly proclaims that the execution of the sovereign powers of the State of Lithuania, abolished by foreign forces in 1940, is re-established, and henceforth Lithuania is again an independent state”.
The Act of Re-establishment of the State of Lithuania was signed on 11 March 1990. On this day, the victims of fights for Lithuanian independence are honoured, the ceremony of hoisting the state flag takes place in the Nepriklausomybės Square, and brass band parades, performances by various groups, and concerts are organized.
