Baltic Cup football tournament was completed with Kaunas team triumph. It asked a riddle to the Scottish football team, although Scots did not participate in that tournament.
Scottish strategist Craig Levein tried to see the real face of Lithuania. Scots in particular duel with Lithuanians will begin the 2012 European Cup qualification. The match will take place in Kaunas on 3rd of September.
45 years guest from Scotland carefully watched Lithuanians game with Latvians and Estonians and wrote down his comments in the notebook.
On the first day of competition Lithuanian team did not win against Latvian team, result was 0:0, but they reached the victory on Sunday against Estonians, the result was 2:0. Estonians with Latvians played with no goals scored.
Daily newspaper’s “Lietuvos rytas” interview with Craig Levein:
- Did the match in Kaunas, which you saw, calm down you?
- Looking at the control game is difficult to see the real potential of the team. However, I am not quite calm, because I remember that several times we were hard done by Lithuanians.
I also visited the stadium in Kaunas (S. Darius and S. Gireno. - Ed.) and hotel, which will be staying at. I was satisfied with what I saw.
- What is the meaning to follow Lithuanian national team, if it does not represent a lot of key players, who will be playing in the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship?
- I wanted to see several more important footballers who have played here. I have seen them videos, but see it lively - is another.
To the Lithuanian tactical maneuvers I disregarded, because when their leaders come together they probably will change the game style. On the other hand, I do not expect big surprises.
- R.Žutautas have very little coaching experience, while you worked at not one club in Scotland and England. Does it give you an advantage?
- I do not think so. While talking with Raimondas, I did not give coaching advices to him. I think he will do his job well. I know how difficult is to be a coach. And over the years, unfortunately this job does not get easier.
- What are the aims of Scottish team at the first group, where also will play European champions Spanish, Czechs?
- We, as the Lithuanians, want to qualify for the finals. But now it’s much harder to do than a decade ago.
There is no team which can win while playing on one foot.
Of course, we hope to bring back the points from Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Liechtenstein, with the Spanish we will have more chances at home.
Travel agency “Visit Lithuania” wants to offer special room prices in Kaunas and also in our capital -Vilnius! Scotland will begin their Euro 2010 qualification campaign away to Lithuania, so don’t miss opportunity to support your team and spend a good time in our country!

FEAST of ST.JOHN – June 24th [ a.k.a. JONINËS]
From ancient times people marked the time of the return of the sun, the shortest and longest night. In olden times it was called the Feast of the DEWS, [ a.k.a. RASOS ]. When Christianity was established in Lithuania, the name was changed to Feast of St. John, according to agrarian folk calendar, the start of haying.
The rituals of the longest day were closely related to agrarian ideas and notions. The main aim was to protect the harvest from natural calamities, evil souls, witches and mid summer visitors like draught, hail, downpours of rain and thunder. The ancients worshipped the great Goddess Lada and God of Thunder, the ruler of thunder and lightning. From May 25th till June 25th men visited taverns while women and girls danced in the fields holding hands, sang and sacrificed white hens.
This year you can participate in these St. John events:

Since antiquity, painting has struggled with its status as a ‘tradition’. This constant awareness of the past is a mixed blessing for contemporary painting. Many of the approaches that contemporary painters are choosing from have been available for generations. Shall painting be used to make images, or shall it by-pass any quest for illusion and express itself through gesture and tactility? Shall painting stay on the surface or shall it create depth? Shall it visualise ideas or attract attention to its own materiality? Having access to a long line of predecessors in the field of painting may help those new to it in their efforts to sound a tone of their own.
In a field that remains inscribed in tradition, it seems counter-productive to only look for that which openly negates tradition. Securing the position of the image by looking for new ways of configuring it has long been part of Western tradition, but so has fighting the whole tradition of images and their special status. Rather, it would appear wiser to stay finely attuned to the tradition of painting and try to detect subtle moves that bend it off in unexpected directions. Newness in painting might be something that at first looks very small, even insignificant. It might be a change of tone rather than a change of programme. It might be a shift in confidence or craftsmanship, a dexterity or an awkwardness that we have not seen before in this precise constellation.
The 14th Vilnius Painting Triennial presents painters who exemplify the tension between tradition and newness and who articulate different attitudes towards the image, the gesture, time and subjectivity.

Venue: Vilnius Graphic Art Centre (Latako str. 3, Vilnius)
Contemporary Art gallery Zaum Projects (Portugal) represents Italian Artist Samuele Belloni Drowings Exhibition “UNTITLED OR TITLED”.
On display the visitor will see small and medium drawings from 2007- 2009 and 5 animation videos.
The drawings are the result of a process relating on very different media. The artist selected a series of images from the Internet, personal photographs, images of famous paintings (mostly japanese old masters).
While drawing this series Belloni got very interested in cinema and the moving image, especially to movies and collages referring to Quentin Tarantino’s cinematography. The reproduction on paper of this inputs, stealing and pirating the images inducted the artist to use them like Duchamp used objects for his ready mades.
The ready-made is today used by a large number of contemporary artists like a material that leads to the object, the work of art. Belloni explains “[...] an artist can use tempera or oil colour. He can use marble, wood or iron. The ready made works the same way, it is a material, a recognised technique in contemporary creation. Instead of using painting or sculpture I started using images. I would call my drawings more “collages” then proper drawings considering the fact that I meticulously reproduced preexisting images without manipulating them.”
