Two new exhibitions are now in place at Vilnius International Airport (VIA). The Lithuanian Central State Archives (LCSA) presents exhibits from two LCSA photodocument collections, i.e. “Lithuania - the Name of Freedom”, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, and “The Curonian Spit”, which displays photos dating back to the 1920s -1930s.

The exhibition reveals about 170 photodocuments, which reflect life in Lithuania throughout the twenty years since the restoration of independence, and a copy of the Act of the Restoration of Independence, the original of which is safeguarded at the Lithuanian State Modern Archives.
This traveling exhibition was displayed at the Lithuanian Government’s building and at various Lithuanian schools.
The photo exhibition “The Curonian Spit” is displayed in a sterile area at the passenger check-in in the transfer area, which is behind the security check post. Scanning work of St. Ann church is still unfinished, but the U.S. organization CyArk has already announced it’s first three-dimensional images of the church.
More three-dimensional images on the web will appear in late autumn. Scanned data processing will take three months.
Non-profit-making company in Lithuania scanned church for free. The engineer Erwin Christofer at the press conference on Thursday did not hide that he is searching for a customer in our region thus.
His company scans the buildings, creates a detailed three-dimensional image, which can be converted to drawings or simply use the context condition of the building in the past.

A fragment of the article:
This post was written by Dirk Häusleigner of Christofori und Partner before departing for Vilnius. Dirk has worked on 3D laser scanning projects around the world, including several projects in the CyArk Archive. These include St. Sebald Church, The Stone Bridge of Regensburg, and Babylon.
We are very excited about this upcoming project of scanning the St. Anne church in Vilnius. The church is probably the most famous structure in Vilnius. It is a masterpiece of late, Flamboyant Gothic architecture, nearly unsurpassed in the world. The brick church was designed by Benedikt Rejt and constructed on the initiative of Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander in 1495-1500.The church has survived into the present almost unchanged. The church was renovated in 1902–1909 when the side arches were uncovered and the walls were strengthened with iron and again in 1960–1970 when the towers were in need of restoration.

According to the data published in the quarterly airport review of ACI EUROPE (European Region of Airports Council International) for the first quarter of this year, Vilnius International Airport (VIA) is one of the fastest growing airports in Europe.
VIA is in the third place among 106 European airports in terms of the increase in the number of flights. The number of flights served at VIA during the first quarter of 2010 amounted to 5,863, which is 24.5 per cent more than during the same quarter of 2009.
Brussels South Charleroi Airport (Belgium) and Antalya Airport (Turkey) are the two fastest growing airports in Europe with the actual increase in the number of flights amounting to 49.2 and 28.4 respectively. In terms of this particular indicator, VIA is the leader among the airports situated in the capital cities of Europe, most of which witnessed a reduction or only a slight increase in the number of flights. As compared to the neighbouring countries, the growth in the number of flights served at VIA was the fastest with that in Riga Airport amounting to 11.1 per cent (13 912 flights) and the number of flights served at Tallinn Airport going down by 3.4 per cent (5 968 flights). “The figures and tendencies show that the company has chosen the right strategy, and that competitive pricing, effective management and the optimisation of business processes at Vilnius International Airport have resulted in positive outcomes,” – says Director General of VIA Tomas Vaišvila. ACI EUROPE in its review says that VIA is in the fifteenth position in Europe among 106 airports according to the growth in the number of passengers. “The chosen strategy and the decisions taken some time ago are bringing the expected results. We already see the increasing number of routs and flights to Vilnius International Airport. Yet another important step would be to increase the flow of passengers travelling to this region, however this is the task that needs to be undertaken together with the institutions responsible for tourism,” – says Mr. Eligijus Masiulis, the Minister of Transport and Communications. Currently 15 airlines are operating regular routs from Vilnius and offering their passengers 25 direct flights.

The installation of a category II system of signalling lights for precision approach and landing at Vilnius International Airport (VIA) has been completed and the system has been acknowledged as suitable for use. On implementation of the procedures of this category, flight safety will be enhanced and the duration of aircraft idle time due to poor weather conditions will be reduced.
Until recently, the airport had a category I precision approach and landing system. This means that the height when aircraft captains took the decision to land or terminate the approach to land at the airport was 60 meters and the horizontal runway visibility was 550 metres. With the category II system, the decision-taking height is reduced to 30 meters, and horizontal visibility is reduced to 350 metres.
‘On implementation of these higher category installations, it will be easier for aircraft captains to land at the airport when there is poor visibility, and as a result aircraft idle time due to bad weather conditions will decrease. All this enhances flight safety and makes the airport more attractive’, Darius Okunevičius, director of the Infrastructure Department of VIA, said.
Mr Okunevičius stated that technical work for the implementation of category II installations has been completed, and procedures for the legalisation of the installations have been initiated. Those procedures could take several months. Experts from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) will also have to present their conclusions regarding the compliance of the installations at the airport with category II requirements.
Siemens UAB, which won a public tender to become contractor of this work, has supplemented the current signalling system of Vilnius Airport with approach and landing area lights; approximately 250 additional lights were installed. The value of the runway work project is LTL 4.86 million.
Runways at airports can be equipped according to three different categories of precision approach and landing systems.
