“Love, pure and true, cruel and deadly, like a fairytale and real…” The great Russian composer Tchaikovsky convincingly described love in all its aspects, taking the listener through a range of emotional states.
This year marks the 170th anniversary of the composer’s birth. His musical oeuvre is among the world’s most famous. His First Piano Concert is the dream of all pianists, while many can hum tunes from “The Nutcracker” or “Swan Lake”. “Eugene Onegin”, completed in 1878, is among the ten most produced stage works. The opera is full of the passion of Pushkin’s drama.
The performance features some of the best Lithuanian soloists: Edgaras Montvidas, winner of the Golden Stage Cross, who performs on the prestigious stages in Europe; Asmik Grigorian, also the winner of the Golden Stage Cross; the winner of the Lithuanian National Prize Vladimiras Prudnikovas; Samsons Izjumovs, a special guest performer from the Latvian National Opera, and others will perform. After the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite came to power in 2009, European journalists quickly dubbed her Lithuania’s Iron Lady, owing to her steely way with words and her black belt in karate. The daughter of a saleswoman and an electrician, she worked part time in a factory while earning a Ph.D. in economics. She went on to become Deputy Minister of Finance in 1999, before holding a series of positions within the European Commission. In 2009, with Lithuania mired deep in recession, Grybauskaite focused her presidential campaign on protecting those with the lowest incomes and tackling unemployment, which had climbed to nearly 16%. Running as an independent, she won with a 68% majority — the largest margin of victory ever recorded in Lithuania’s presidential election history.

“The Road of Freedom” is a sculpture commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the restoration of the State of Lithuania and invites all residents of the country and patriots of Lithuania to continue along the path of freedom and solidarity.
The Project idea evolved from a reflection of contemporary apathy, pessimism and confrontation. “The Road of Freedom” is a commemoration of the fight for independence and a symbol of freedom and solidarity for future generations. It encourages the remembrance of the idea of solidarity which helped Lithuania to gain its freedom.
The sculpture is symbolic of the live chain of people who, more than 20 years ago, joined hands and connected the three Baltic States who were striving for independence. The chain stretched a length of over 600 kilometres and became an expression of unprecedented solidarity.
This sculpture, just like “The Baltic Way” created unanimously by the Lithuanian people 21 years ago, is a collective creation – everyone can contribute to the Project and get a special brick which will be put in the sculpture. Each brick will be the in the colours of the Lithuanian flag and the name of the person who has contributed to the sculpture will be stamped on each brick.
