On November 16, the Latvian national airline airBaltic will introduce a fee of EUR 5 per passenger for check-in at the airport. Members of the BalticMiles loyalty programme will continue to be able to check in for free.
airBaltic President and CEO Bertolt Flick: “airBaltic wants to offer additional privileges to members of the BalticMiles loyalty programme. Free check-in at the airport is another way of encouraging people to sign up for the programme. We are confident that BalticMiles points will become a parallel currency in future, because increasing numbers of partners will be joining the programme and members will earn and spend points almost everywhere - when talking on the phone, filling up petrol in your car, buying milk and bread, or using dry-cleaning services, for instance.”
Passengers who do not yet have a BalticMiles card will be able to join the loyalty programme right at the check-in counter at the airport, in order to avoid the fee. The EUR 5 check-in fee will take effect on November 16. It will apply to passengers in economy class who have purchased their tickets after the announcement of the new rules on November 4.
The check-in fee will not be charged from passengers with reduced mobility, children up to the age of 12, and passengers who check in on the Internet. The fee will also be waived for passengers departing from airports at which Web check-in is not available.

Eurostat – the statistical office of the EU – has reported a record-breaking unemployment level in the European Union during the last nine years, by listing the Baltic States in the very top of the list, according to the proportion of their unemployed population. Latvian national airline airBaltic continues its commenced efforts and is refunding full cost of economy class ticket to those passengers who have lost their job during the period from purchase of the ticket until a day of flight.
Eurostat has concluded that the unemployment level in Latvia in September reached 19.7%, while the relevant levels in Estonia and Lithuania were 13.8% and 13.3% accordingly.
Bertolt Flick, President and CEO of Latvian national airline airBaltic emphasises: “More and more people of the Baltic States are losing their jobs, therefore we must be understanding towards our passengers by refunding money that has been spent for purchase of flight tickets. Unfortunately, the current situation shows that we will not be able to cease this privilege within the near future because recovery of economy is expected in 2011 only”.
Customers of airBaltic are kindly invited to visit the offices of the airline where they have the opportunity to receive ticket refund, by presenting a correspondingly prepared statement on individual’s status of unemployment, issued by the State Employment Agency (Latvia), the Employment Exchange (Lithuania), or the Unemployment Insurance Department (Estonia).
The said refund applies to tickets of economy class only which are purchased after April 16, 2009.

Bertolt Flick, President and CEO of airBaltic: “We are very pleased that airBaltic is recognized Airline of the Year by the regional airline business community and media. airBaltic will continue its path of development and growth despite the challenging and complex market conditions.”
The ERA panel of experts had no doubt in choosing airBaltic as the Airline of the Year, and named the below reasons for their choice – airBaltic succeeded in developing a new business model from a point to point low cost operator into a network carrier; building an important international hub in Riga in a period of severe economic crisis in the Baltic markets.
The ERA Airline of the Year Award was introduced in 1991 and has since grown to become the most widely recognised industry award in this sector. The ERA Airline of the Year award recognizes success and achievement made by a member regional airline, considering the context and specifics of individual airline’s operating conditions.
