Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, will also be the capital of culture for all of Europe in 2011. This will be the biggest cultural event in the history of Estonia. Something will be happening in Tallinn every day in 2011, since the year of capital of culture will be bringing some of the world’s biggest names to Estonia.
Tallinn 2011 and stories of the seashore
In 2011, Tallinn begins the largest storytelling event in its history. Writers, musicians, artists and actors will tell, paint, sing and act tales inspired by the sea, speaking of Estonia and its people. The stories will be short and long, modern and ancient, exciting and tragic; most importantly, they will all be genuinely Estonian-like.
Storytelling gives birth to meaning and understanding. Our stories help discover and preserve the image of a young Estonia as part of Europe. Stories give rise to Estonian history as they relate to Europe and the modern world, as well as the face and achievements of the Estonian people. More significant, however, is the fact that Tallinn’s position as the culture capital will allow these stories to be shared with visitors and those observing the year of cultural celebration from all around the world.
By this day, the tradition of the European Capital of Culture has given more than 40 cities an opportunity to present their distinct and diverse culture to millions of people from all over the world during one year.

Travel agency “Visit Lithuania” invites you to plunge in vibrant and active life of Tallinn and also visit other European capitals of culture: Vilnius - former European capital of culture 2009, Riga - future European capital of culture 2014!

Please contact us and get acquainted with Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – three Baltic Sea shore countries!

Vilnius

Date: 30 September
Venue: Theatre Arena (Olimpiečių St. 3, Vilnius)
Director – Gintaras Varnas
Ticket prices: LTL 20, 30, 50

An original play based on one of the most famous plays of the late 20th century, “Merlin: Or, The Wasteland” by Tankred Dorst and Ursula Ehler. It is a drama mystery that links the Middle Ages and the contemporary era while chronicling the emergence and collapse of Utopia. This play, translated into Lithuanian by Antanas A. Jonynas, has been performed in many theatres worldwide. A parable of “The Wasteland“ today means a cracked and distorted world where, in the face of the economic and moral crisis of the 21st century, Utopia gains a new meaning. Director Gintaras Varnas, working together with a team of different generations of Lithuanian actors, try to present the play by Tankred Dorst through the eyes of a contemporary person who survives the finale of Utopia and experiences a deep longing for another. The director uses different techniques of artistic expression from different theatrical époques – from the shadow theatre of the East and doll forms of the Middle Ages to modern “new realism”.

The play “The Wasteland” was performed for the first time in 2004 on the derelict premises of a print-shop “Tiesa”, in cooperation with “Intercult” (Sweden) who initiated an international programme SEAS. The play was performed in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and Gdansk (in a former shipyard which witnessed the emergence of the Solidarity movement). Tankred Dorst attended the performance in Vilnius and gave it a superior evaluation. “The Wasteland” in Independent Lithuania became the first continuous theatre project to travel across untraditional areas and demonstrate a new generation of actors’ approach to changing times.

The idea to create a new version of the play this year, when Vilnius becomes the European Capital of Culture, was inspired by the modern times and contemporary society as well as cultural situation in Lithuania. The new version of “The Wasteland – Vilnius” will represent an original artistic and public event in the face of the contemporary public and moral crisis.

On 20 July Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the winner of the quiz “Millennium of Lithuania. Culture and History”. The winner of the main prize is Masha Serebryanaya from Ukraine.
