Two new exhibitions are now in place at Vilnius International Airport (VIA). The Lithuanian Central State Archives (LCSA) presents exhibits from two LCSA photodocument collections, i.e. “Lithuania - the Name of Freedom”, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, and “The Curonian Spit”, which displays photos dating back to the 1920s -1930s.
The exhibition commemorating the restoration of Lithuania’s independence is displayed in a sterile area in the departures hall between the third and fourth departure gates. The exhibition reveals about 170 photodocuments, which reflect life in Lithuania throughout the twenty years since the restoration of independence, and a copy of the Act of the Restoration of Independence, the original of which is safeguarded at the Lithuanian State Modern Archives.
This traveling exhibition was displayed at the Lithuanian Government’s building and at various Lithuanian schools.
The photo exhibition “The Curonian Spit” is displayed in a sterile area at the passenger check-in in the transfer area, which is behind the security check post. The black-and-white photos reveal the life of the Curonians, their fishery and ships and images of dunes, and the seaside from the beginning of the 20th century.
Passengers to VIA will be able to enjoy the exhibits during the summer.

Extract from the “Lonely planet”:
Best beaches to swing a hammock
Dreaming of your own place in the sun? In this excerpt from Lonely Planet’s 1000 Ultimate Experiences, we take you to some of the world’s sweetest, most sublime beaches…all you need to do is pack the sunscreen!
Dahab, Egypt
Dahab means ‘gold’ in Arabic – a name given to the area because of its golden sands. With a unique location on the edge of the Sinai desert, Dahab certainly remains an untapped treasure; budget accommodation almost on the beach means you can virtually roll out of your sleeping bag and into the water. Backed by mountain ranges, Dahab’s Bedouin settlement, Assalah, is a favoured beach-bum haunt, with unspoilt charm and chilled beachside cafes, while up the coast are famous diving spots.
Curonian Spit, Lithuania
This 98km lick of sand is a wondrous mixture of dunes (some as high as 200m) and forest – the smell of pine will impart an otherworldly quality to your hammock time. Wilhelm von Humboldt believed that a trip to the Curonian Spit was essential nourishment for the soul, and Thomas Mann was also a fan. It’s said that around 14 villages are buried under the endless, shifting dunes, making the Spit a kind of Baltic Sahara.

With its empty beaches, mild climate and unbelievably low prices, Lithuania’s Curonian spit made a perfect family holiday destination!

Can a family of four holiday anywhere outside of the UK for an affordable sum? Researching beach holidays earlier this year in France, Spain and Greece, I couldn’t find anything for less than £3,000.

I don’t mind investing in a good time but this is ridiculous. What happened to the recessional bargain? I reluctantly resigned myself to that idiotic concept, the “staycation” (holidaying at home – also known as not going on holiday at all). And then I heard about Lithuania.

We are in the queue for departures at Heathrow, but we haven’t a clue where we’re going. Or rather we know what it says on our tickets - Palanga, via Copenhagen - but beyond that we’re pretty much in the dark.

We trudge through the security checks and into the departure lounge, and are ready for a little light airport shopping when our stress levels, hovering around acute, soar back up to alarming: our flight to Copenhagen is delayed. When we get there, we’ll have only 15 minutes to catch our connecting flight to Palanga. Was this trip really going to de-stress us?

I won’t bore you with how my friend Leonie and I came to find ourselves in a last-minute bid for sun, sanity and soothing surroundings, but suffice to say that mounting work loads combined with school holidays, the ghastly British weather and the need to convene (we work together, but from our separate homes) were driving us to the brink. Un-hilly relief, interesting and quickly changing landscape was well as a dense network of roads with hard covering makes Lithuanian roads very suitable for travelling by bicycle.
