Credit Cards & Bank Machines
The use of credit cards, particularly VISA and MASTERCARD, has become very widespread in the country during the past few years. In addition to obtaining cash advances at banks, they can also be used in the many ATM's. These are sometimes located within banks, post offices or shops, but many are on the street, offering another 24-hour banking facility. Most establishments (hotels, restaurants and stores) accept credit cards. AMERICAN EXPRESS and THOMAS COOK are exchangeable at most banks but not to be used for direct tender at restaurants and shops.
Customs
Arriving to Lithuania through an international airport or seaport, one person is allowed to bring along no more than 1L of strong liquor (whisky, vodka), 2L of wine or champagne, 3L of beer, 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco. If you come to Lithuania by car or by train, the quotas allowed are considerably less: 0.5L of strong liquor, 2L of wine or champagne, 0.5L of beer, 100 cigarettes or 100g of tobacco. It is prohibited to bring along home made beverages. If you carry more than 10 000Lt (2 500 USD) of cash in any currency, you are obliged to make a written declaration at the customs post. With permission you can take home as much art as you can carry tax-free unless it's more than 50 years old, in which case expect to pay a 10-20% duty. For exact information contact the Custom Department.
Disabled travellers
Only some hotels cater for disabled visitors. Unfortunately, a lack of kerb drops and the cobblestone streets of Old Town make it hard to ride for wheelchair users, and public transport is not accessible for disabled travellers.
